Joseph Rolette letter, 1839 May 25.

Autograph letter signed, Joseph Rolette to Major Thomas Floyd Smith regarding debt to Captain Alexander Seymour Hooe, and discussing an unidentified "boy" slave who has sued for his freedom on account of having lived in free territory. This fits the era and process of Dred Scott and his suit for freedom, but neither Scott nor Fort Snelling is directly mentioned in the letter.

An agent of the American Fur Company from 1821 to 1834, Rolette and his partners Hercules Dousman and H.H. Sibley in 1834 became stockholders in Ramsay Crooks' reorganized American Fur Company and contracted to run its Western Outfit.
